The Ghana News Agency (GNA) was established on March 5, 1957, i.e. on the eve of Ghana’s independence and was charged with “dissemination of true unbiased news”. It was the first news agency to be established in sub-Saharan Africa. The GNA was part of a broader communications policy that sought to use the state’s information arm to create a viable, cohesive and united nation-state. The GNA is therefore serving in the unique role of mobilizing citizens for nation building, economic and social development, national unity and integration.
