Following the positive reception of their debut single Kiddie Time, Ghanaian music collective 99 PHACES has released their debut EP. The project, unconventionally titled “SO WE MADE A TAPE”, was slated for release on March 17, 2023.

“A single voice can be easily silenced, but a chorus of passionate creatives can’t be silenced for too long, so we made a tape.”

SO WE MADE A TAPE

The album is the embodiment of the personal journeys the members of the collective have taken in their young musical careers. In a world burning with creativity, it can sometimes be difficult to make yourself seen or heard. Over time they have realized that if you want to make a difference, building a community, a movement, can achieve a lot.

This is the goal of tapes collectively and by extension. Inspiring other creatives to walk together to reach their goals and dreams. SWMAT is a tape that has something for everyone. Afrobeats, alte and hip-hop are just some of the elements that make up the project’s sound. Like the artists involved in the project; Freddie Gambini, Mophie, Cozypoles, Mel, Inswain Auggie, and the only non-member featured artist Baba J have diverse influences and sounds, the songs reflect just that.

99 PHACES is following the path of Ghanaian musicians before them. Collaboration has always been the backbone of musical culture and renaissance in Ghana. From groups working with others of the same kind to solo acts, this is the Ghanaian way of music. And teaming up with Baba J on this project 99 Steps looks to inspire this level of collaboration and high standards.
